Experience Overview

This event combines our 2-day Field Marksmanship Clinic with up to 3 days of cow elk hunting on a private ranch in northern Wyoming (Quarter Circle Eleven Ranch Outfitters, Outfitter Lic # BG 363). It is a great way to improve your skills, and fill the freezer at the same time.

Your "Experience" will start with our Long Range University 2-day Field Marksmanship Clinic. Of all the various training classes we provide, we feel that this one best prepares you to be successful on this hunt regardless of your level of shooting experience. You will train with a Gunwerks Magnus Rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor working specifically on field shooting positions, use of our tripod and tripod sling, and trouble shooting your shooting technique. The class includes our Gunwerks Custom Tripod Sling which is yours to keep after the event. The rifle rental and ammunition fee for the clinic is included in your registration.
For the hunt we recommend you bring your personal rifle however we do have a limited number of hunting rifles in elk suitable calibers available to rent. On the second afternoon you will switch to the rifle you will hunt with. You will confirm zero and validate your trajectory out to your maximum comfortable range. We will assist you in loading the data into your laser rangefinder if necessary and ensure everything is tracking correctly by shooting targets at different distances from your preferred shooting position/support.
For the hunt, you will be partnered with another hunter and a professional guide and hunt on ranches that are approximately a 30 minute drive from Cody. The guides will field dress your animal for you however you will be responsible for transporting your meat home or to a processor.

This hunt requires a Wyoming Reduced Price Cow/Calf Elk Tag. This is a DRAWING ONLY and CANNOT BE PURCHASED OVER THE COUNTER. There are three different tag options which are all valid on a portion of the ranch. The ranch property is split by the unit boundary so Elk unit 61 and unit 58 tags are both valid on portions of the ranch. For unit 61 the Type 6 and Type 7 reduced price cow/calf tags are valid. IF YOU APPLY FOR THE 61 TAG, CHECK THE SEASON DATES CAREFULLY TO MAKE SURE IT CORRESPONDS TO YOUR DESIRED DATES IN LATE OCTOBER, NOVEMBER OR EARLY DECEMBER. The Area 61 Type 6 tag is valid from Nov 7 to Dec 21. The Area 61 Type 7 tag is valid from Sept 1 to Dec 21. There is a Type 7 tag only valid in January which you do not want.

For unit 58 you will need the Type 6 reduced price cow/calf tag. This tag is valid Oct 1 to Dec 21. All of these tags, especially the unit 61 tags, are fairly easy for a non-resident to draw in the Wyoming Leftover Tag Draw which takes place in Mid June of each year. The Area 61 Type 7 tag was 100% draw odds for non resident in the 2023 leftover draw. If you select the "reduced price" tag option this will not affect your Wyoming preference points. For more information please refer to this website.

Wyoming Leftover Tags

To reserve your spot we will need a $1500 deposit. If you fail to draw the required Wyoming Cow / Calf tag, your deposit will be returned or can be applied to another event. Once you have secured your tag you can pay the remaining balance up to 120 days prior to the start of the hunt.

You will be responsible for securing your own lodging and transportation in Cody Wyoming. Lunches will be provided during the training and during the hunt. There are some great restaurants in Cody for dinner and great breakfast options as well.

LRU Overview

Long Range University exists for the specific purpose of helping you make quick ethical one shot kills in the field. The core of our content is contained in our L1, L2, and L3 classes which utilize a building block approach to provide education and training in every factor which impacts your lethal hit probability. Interwoven throughout all three classes is a training strategy which will improve your ability to function under pressure and significantly extend the range and conditions under which you can take an ethical shot. At Long Range University you will learn to recognize when the conditions are not suitable to ensure a lethal hit.

You will use our Gunwerks Shooting systems during the L1 and L2 classes, however what you learn will apply to any long range shooting system. Using a Gunwerks rifle system and ammunition for this course facilitates and accelerates the learning process. This allows you to focus on the core class content and leave equipment concerns to the instructor. Put wear and tear on our rifle not yours.

In our L3 class we encourage you to bring your personal rifle regardless of manufacturer. This is where you really learn the capability and limits of your “system” which includes you and your marksmanship ability, your rifles capability, your ballistic program, and your ability to compensate for wind and other environmental conditions, all in a realistic mountain hunting environment.

Our Classes

  • L1 Long Range Ballistics

  • L2 Advanced Ballistics and Wind

  • L3 Mountain Shooting Application

Our L1, L2, and L3 classes must be taken in sequential order and provide a comprehensive learning experience. We also offer “Clinics'' which are a deep dive into a specific topic or weapon system. There are no prerequisite classes to attend any of our Clinics.
