3-Day Pronghorn Hunt with Shooting System Readiness Clinic
LRU Overview
Long Range University exists for the specific purpose of helping you make quick ethical one shot kills in the field. The core of our content is contained in our L1, L2, and L3 classes which utilize a building block approach to provide education and training in every factor which impacts your lethal hit probability. Interwoven throughout all three classes is a training strategy which will improve your ability to function under pressure and significantly extend the range and conditions under which you can take an ethical shot. At Long Range University you will learn to recognize when the conditions are not suitable to ensure a lethal hit.
You will use our Gunwerks Shooting systems during the L1 and L2 classes, however what you learn will apply to any long range shooting system. Using a Gunwerks rifle system and ammunition for this course facilitates and accelerates the learning process. This allows you to focus on the core class content and leave equipment concerns to the instructor. Put wear and tear on our rifle not yours.
In our L3 class we encourage you to bring your personal rifle regardless of manufacturer. This is where you really learn the capability and limits of your “system” which includes you and your marksmanship ability, your rifles capability, your ballistic program, and your ability to compensate for wind and other environmental conditions, all in a realistic mountain hunting environment.
Our Classes
- L1 Long Range Ballistics
- L2 Advanced Ballistics and Wind
- L3 Mountain Shooting Application
Our L1, L2, and L3 classes must be taken in sequential order and provide a comprehensive learning experience. We also offer “Clinics'' which are a deep dive into a specific topic or weapon system. There are no prerequisite classes to attend any of our Clinics.
Our Standalone Clinics
- Shooting System Readiness
- Long Range Muzzleloader
- Field Marksmanship
Our Hunting Experiences
The ultimate in training is live field application. For the next step in your journey to proficiency, we offer several different training / hunting experiences with Gunwerks vetted outfitters in different environments. From Barbary Sheep in the mountains of West Texas, to beginner friendly Antelope in New Mexico, to freezer filling Cow Elk in Oregon, all provide a fantastic experience and help you achieve the next level of capability in the field.
Experience Overview
Important Tag Information:
Tags are not available to purchase from New Mexico Game and Fish until after July 1.
You will receive an e-mail with detailed directions on how to purchase the correct tag after July 1.
This event is intended for proficient shooters and LRU Alumni who are already comfortable shooting at 400 yards plus. Antelope populations we're down in New Mexico for 2024 so for 2025 we have reduced our tag numbers by 2/3rds. We have also added a day of hunting so it is now a 3 day hunt. This is the first Antelope season of the year and so you will be among the first hunters on the ranch and have the first chance at the biggest bucks.
You will check into the Whittington Center in the afternoon or evening of Aug 21st. The morning of the 22nd we will run our Shooting System Readiness Clinic. This starts with refresher classes on Marksmanship and Long Range Ballistics. Once on the range you will confirm zero and ensure you have good long range data by shooting at varying distances. After lunch we will teach a refresher class on Wind and using the Laser Rangefinder. After the class we will shoot varying distances using the data from your laser rangefinder to ensure your whole system is ready to go. The day will end with some open range time to practice whatever you choose with the assistance of an LRU Instructor.
For the hunt, you will be partnered with one other hunter and a professional guide and hunt on ranches that are approximately an hour's drive from the Whittington Center. Gunwerks LRU instructors will assist with coaching on the hunts however we cannot guarantee we will have someone with every group of hunters. The hunting outfitter will provide meals and also offers meat processing and taxidermy services for an additional fee. You will also have the option to donate your meat to charity.
We encourage you to bring your own rifle however we will have a limited number of Gunwerks Magnus 6.5 Creedmoor's, Federal ammunition, laser rengefinders, and shooting support equipment available to rent. Select the Rental Rifle and Equipment purchase option vs User Supplied Rifle if you wish to rent a rifle.
