Preparing your rifle for a hunt doesn't have to be a lengthy ordeal. With a systematic approach and the right tools, you can get your rifle ready in just 15 minutes. Here's how:
Step 1: Check Your Zero
Start by ensuring your rifle is on target. Fire a few shots at a known distance target (100 yards is recommend) to confirm your zero. This step obviously ensures that your shots will hit where intended when dialing to further distances.
Step 2: Create a Rifle Profile
Download the free Revic Ballistic app and create a rifle profile by entering key details that include things like caliber, scope height, twist rate, bullet weight and BC, muzzle velocity, etc... This personalized profile will fine-tune your ballistics calculations.
Step 3: True the Trajectory
Head to the range and shoot at a target around 600 to 800 yards away (or 80% up to 100% of your rifles max effective range). What is max effective range? Where your bullet goes subsonic (around 1100 fps).( Video link )Compare your predicted impacts from the app with the actual hits. This "truing" process is very simple. Go into the Truing tab in the Revic app and type in the range of the target, then type in the ballistic solution that you ultimately hit center of the target with and adjust muzzle velocity or ballistic coefficient.
Step 4: Bluetooth to Ballistic Range Finding Device
Finally, use the Revic app to transfer your customized rifle profile to the BR4 Range finder or BLR10B Range-finding binoculars via Bluetooth. This step integrates your ballistic calculations directly into your optics, giving you a clear advantage in the field. For confidence, lase and shoot a couple more targets within the range you expect to shoot on your hunt.
In just 15 minutes, you've optimized your rifle for accuracy and efficiency. This quick and effective setup routine, including checking your zero, creating a rifle profile, trueing the trajectory, and syncing with your range finding device, ensures you are well-prepared for a successful hunt. I do this process before every hunt, and once you understand how and why we do each step, it is a quick in and out of the range with the confidence I need.
